Nasties: Stearic Acid

Nasties: Stearic Acid (otherwise known as Magnesium Stearate)

Most people are silly. Harsh? Maybe. True. Definetly! Most people are aware of the chemicals but due to fancy packaging, journalists or celebrity endorsement believe the any amounts of Toxic ingredients are indeed good for us. Wrong. Lots of beauticians/ therapists are coming out of  school, having being preached to about the genuis of chemical peels + potent anti-aging brands as the unnatural future of beauty.

Stearic Acid is one of those frequently used ingredients that I found whilst researching for spa products. It is worth checking with your brand of choice wether theirs is extracted from vegetable (Coconut, Olive) or animal fats or has been unorganically manufactured using chemicals – like the kind of Stearic Acid which is an ingredient found in fireworks, for coating iron + aluminium.

Here’s something interesting to ponder. The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health analyzed 2,983 chemicals used in personal care products. The final results were as follows.

  • 884 of the chemicals were toxic
  • 778 caused acute toxicity
  • 376 caused skin and eye irritation
  • 314 caused biological mutation
  • 218 caused reproductive complications
  • 148 caused cancerous tumors

One of those is Stearic Acid.

Stearic Acids most basic function is to kill skin cells immediately as soon as they come into contact with your body.

Stearic Acid is most commonly found in:

Shaving Cream

Sun tan lotions

shampoo

powders

wipes

nappy creams
